Terms of Service

1. Introduction and Acceptance

Home Ed Stars (“we”, “us”, “our”) provides an AI-powered home education platform for UK children in Year 3–11 (Key Stages 2, 3, and 4). These Terms of Service (“Terms”) form a legally binding agreement between you (“you”, the parent or legal guardian) and Home Ed Stars.

By creating an account, subscribing, or otherwise using the service, you confirm that you have read, understood, and accepted these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

2. Account Terms

You must be at least 18 years old and have parental responsibility for any child you enrol. Each parent account holder is responsible for:

• Providing accurate registration information (name, email, child name, year group).
• Keeping account credentials confidential and not sharing them. Child accounts must only be used by the child they were created for.
• All activity that occurs under your account, including your child's use of the platform.
• Notifying us promptly of any unauthorised access by emailing hello@homeedstars.com.

3. Acceptable Use

You agree not to use the service to:

• Reverse engineer, decompile, scrape, or otherwise attempt to extract the underlying code, models, or training data.
• Interfere with or disrupt the service, its servers, or the networks connected to it, including by attempting to bypass rate limits or usage quotas.
• Share, sell, or sublicense your account credentials or any generated content outside the scope of personal home education.
• Upload, post, or transmit content that is unlawful, abusive, harassing, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable, particularly in the context of a children's learning platform.
• Attempt to elicit responses from the AI that are off-topic, harmful, or age-inappropriate. We moderate child input server-side and log moderation events for parental review.
• Use the service for any purpose other than the non-commercial home education of the children enrolled on your account.

4. Subscription Terms

Home Ed Stars is offered on a monthly subscription basis. By subscribing you agree to the following:

Billing and renewal

Subscriptions are billed monthly in advance and renew automatically at the end of each billing period until cancelled. Prices are shown in GBP and include any applicable VAT.

Cancellation

You may cancel your subscription at any time through the Stripe Customer Portal accessed from your dashboard. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you retain access until that date. We do not offer mid-period refunds or pro-rating.

Free trial

New accounts receive a free trial of five generated lessons and one assessment. No payment details are required to start the trial. When the trial allowance is used, you will be prompted to subscribe.

Top-ups

Top-ups (additional lesson or assessment credits) are one-off purchases processed through Stripe. Credits are consumed on a first-in, first-out basis and expire at the end of the month following purchase. Top-up purchases are final and non-refundable.

5. Consumer Cancellation Rights

Under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, UK consumers normally have a 14-day cooling-off period for digital services.

By starting to use the service immediately upon purchase (including during a free trial or after subscribing), you expressly consent to the service being supplied before the end of the 14-day period and acknowledge that you thereby lose your right to cancel under those Regulations. This does not affect your other statutory rights, including rights relating to faulty or misdescribed services.

6. Content and Intellectual Property

Home Ed Stars owns all rights, title, and interest in the platform, including the software, subject registries, curriculum mappings, prompt library, design, brand, and associated trademarks.

You retain ownership of content you or your child submit (written responses, bespoke topic requests, learning profile details). By submitting such content you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to process it for the purpose of providing the service — for example, sending written challenge responses to Anthropic for AI marking.

AI-generated lesson content is licensed to you for personal, non-commercial home education use only. You may print, annotate, and share lesson output within your household. You may not redistribute, resell, or publish it externally.

7. AI-Generated Content Disclaimer

Lesson content, quiz answers, challenge marking, and tutor chat responses are generated by large language models. Despite our extensive guardrails, prompt engineering, and factual accuracy rules, AI output can occasionally contain errors, omissions, or out-of-date information.

Parents are responsible for reviewing lesson content before presenting it to their child and for verifying any facts, methods, or answers that matter. Home Ed Stars is a tool to support home education — not a replacement for parental oversight. If you notice inaccurate or inappropriate content, please flag it through the in-app feedback button so we can improve the system.

8. Data Protection

We process personal data in accordance with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Our Privacy Policy describes what data we collect, how we use it, the legal bases for processing, and your rights. Where these Terms and the Privacy Policy conflict on data matters, the Privacy Policy prevails.

9. Limitation of Liability

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability for (a) death or personal injury caused by negligence, (b) fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or (c) any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded under UK law, including your rights as a consumer.

Subject to the above, and to the fullest extent permitted by law, Home Ed Stars is not liable for (a) any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages; (b) any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill, or other intangible losses; or (c) any educational outcome or assessment result achieved or not achieved through use of the service. Our aggregate liability for any claim arising out of these Terms is limited to the total amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim.

10. Termination

You may stop using the service and delete your account at any time via the dashboard. If you cancel a subscription, access continues until the end of the paid period.

We may suspend or terminate your account if you breach these Terms, if required by law, or if we reasonably believe your continued use poses a risk to other users or to the platform. We will give you reasonable notice where practicable.

On termination, we will retain your data only as long as required by our Privacy Policy retention schedule or as required by law.

11. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the version number and “Last Updated” date at the top of this page. For material changes we will notify you by email to the address on your account and/or by a prominent in-app notice. Continued use of the service after an update constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

12. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms or the service will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales, except that consumers resident in Scotland or Northern Ireland retain the right to bring proceedings in their local courts.
